Instead of a democracy the Convention established a war dictatorship operating through the Committee of Public Safety, the Committee of General Security, and numerous agencies such as the Revolutionary Tribunal. Known to history as the Reign of Terror, this period represented the efforts of a few men to govern the country and wage war in a time of crisis. Georges Danton and Maximilien Robespierre dominated the new government, with Robespierre gradually gaining over Danton and others. Price and wage maximums were unevenly enforced, and acceptance of the inflated paper currency, the assignats, was made mandatory. A huge number of suspects were arrested; thousands were executed, including Marie Antoinette. A revolutionary calendar, with 10-day weeks, was adopted.

The fanatic Jacques Hébert, who had introduced the worship of a goddess of Reason, was arrested and executed in Mar., 1794, along with other so-called ultra-revolutionaries. The next month Danton and his followers, the “Indulgents,” who advocated relaxation of emergency measures, were executed. To counter Hébertist influence, Robespierre proclaimed (June, 1794) the cult of the Supreme Being. France’s military successes lessened the need for strong domestic measures, but Robespierre called for new purges. Fearing that the Terror would be turned against them, members of the Convention arrested Robespierre on July 27, 1794 (Thermidor), and had him guillotined; a majority of Commune members were also executed.

On September 20, 1962, the Port Authority announced the selection of Minoru Yamasaki as lead architect and Emery Roth & Sons as associate architects. Yamasaki devised the plan to incorporate twin towers; Yamasaki’s original plan called for the towers to be 80 stories tall. In order to meet the Port Authority’s requirement to build 10 million square feet (930,000 m²) of office space, the buildings would each need to be 110 stories tall.

On August 3, 1970 the Marin County Civic Center, which houses the Marin County Superior Court, was the scene of an assault by a group of African-American political activists led by Jonathan Jackson, the 17-year old brother of  George Jackson, demanding the release of the “Soledad Brothers”. The group released several prisoners in the courtroom and took a number of hostages including the presiding judge, Harold Haley. A shotgun was taped to the judge’s neck. While they were attempting to escape, Haley and prisoners William Christmas, James McClain, and Jonathan Jackson were killed as they attempted to drive away from the courthouse…..

On August 21, 1971, three days before he was to go on trial, 29 year old George Jackson was shot and killed at San Quentin prison. According to the warden of San Quentin, lawyer-activist Stephen Bingham had smuggled a pistol concealed in a tape recorder into the prison to Jackson, who was housed in San Quentin’s Adjustment Center time awaiting trial for the murder of a prison guard. On August 21, 1971, Jackson, according to the state, used the pistol, an Astra 9-mm semi-automatic, to take over his tier in the Adjustment Center. Six people were killed, including prison guards Jere Graham, Frank DeLeon and Paul Krasnes, two white prisoners, and Jackson himself. Following the incident, Bingham fled the country, living in Europe for 13 years before surrendering in 1984 and returning to the United States to stand trial, where he was acquitted of all charges.

San Francisco based INVS and  5th Column come together and celebrate Saturnalia with the release of a this tee. Saturnalia is a holiday where Romans feasted together to celebrate one of their Gods, Saturn.

The design of the shirt is based off of Spanish artist Francisco Goya’s “Saturn Devouring His Son.”

The collab comes in two different colorways, black and burgundy, both are printed with 3M reflective ink. They release Thursday, December 17 (Saturnalia) at the INVS shop in San Francisco. It will release online the same day at 3pm on the INVS web store.

[Christmas was invented to replace Saturnalia.]

The Saturnalia
was an ancient Roman holiday marked by a week of wild partying, lawlessness and a holiday celebrating the return of the sun; ending in dedications to the temple of the god Saturn, which was on 17 December.  People did any damage they pleased without fear of
consequence as the Roman courts were closed and law stated that no one
could be punished for anything. This tradition began by Roman
communities choosing someone as an enemy of Rome, representing the Lord of Misrule.
Each “enemy” was forced to over-indulge in food, sex, and mayhem for a week.
At the end of the week, the person was murdered in representation of
conquering the forces of darkness.

The concept behind immortality through cryonics goes something like this: If you have yourself frozen immediately after you’ve died, doctors in the future might someday have enough knowledge to repair the cell damage that led to your death. If they fix what killed you, they might be able to reanimate you, because your cells have been preserved. In an extreme view, medical science might even someday be able reverse the symptoms of aging, meaning you could die an old woman and come back as a teenager. These claims are made by the Web site for one company that has put many hopeful people into cold storage.

It’s not that simple, though. No human being has yet been reanimated. One complicating factor is that when your body cells freeze, water leaks out of them and collects in the spaces between them. The ice crystals that form can puncture the cell membranes. So, in addition to having to cure whatever killed you, science of the future will also have to have miniature robots travel inside your body to repair the ice damage.

(A newer process called vitrification freezes without producing these damaging ice crystals, according to the Web page of Alcor, one of the leading cryogenic companies.)

Sounds like science fiction, and most scientists would agree that it is, but it’s probably worth remembering that scientists currently freeze human embryos and successfully implant them later. My dog, Lucia, plays with one of these thawed “totsicles” regularly.

Since 1967, when James Bedford became the first person to undergo cryogenic suspension, at least dozens of people have paid tens of thousands and up to have their bodies (or, if they’re on a budget, just their heads) frozen.

I’m honored to have worked with the Black Scale Family on this collaboration,  The 5th Giza.

For thousands of years, the largest structures on Earth were pyramids.  Built in 2056 b.c the Great Pyramid of Giza, was made to entomb the Egyptian king, Khufu.  It’s took almost 25 years to construct. It is the only one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World still in existence.

By August 1968 Charles Manson and his “Family” had already been evicted from Dennis Wilson (of The Beach Boys) house and had established a base for the group at Spahn’s Movie Ranch, near Topanga Canyon. On March 23, 1969, Manson called, uninvited, on 10050 Cielo Drive, which he had known as the residence of record producer, Terry Melcher. By that time Melcher was no longer residing there; since that February, the tenants had been actress Sharon Tate and her husband, film director Roman Polanski.

February 28th 1997, North Hollywood. A series of bank robberies culminated in quite possibly the most violent shootout in modern American police history. The lives of 36 patrons and 12 employees were endangered when two heavily armed men, Larry Phillips Jr and Emil Matasareanu, wearing body armor decided to rob the Bank of America in North Hollywood. Seen entering the bank by Los Angeles police officers, the two men intimidated employees and patrons by firing shots inside while not realizing that Los Angeles police officers were surrounding the building. As they left the bank, the robbers became aware of their predicament and began shooting at police and civilians.

Three civilians and nine officers were shot within the first five minutes of the shootout, and a total of 350 officers were called to the scene. As police bullets bounced off the suspects, it became evident that the two men were wearing body armor and had out-gunned the police with their armor piercing bullets and semiautomatic weapons. A total of seven civilians and eleven LAPD officers were injured. Despite the overwhelming odds, many heroic officers, while in grave danger, initiated officer and citizen rescues as the suspects continued to exchange shots with other officers. The suspects fired more than 1,100 rounds from their semiautomatic assault rifles. Eventually, members of the LAPD SWAT team shot and killed them both. This event in Los Angeles history, changed law enforcement rules of engagement throughout the country.

This was my television memory; now I was seeing first hand what was really happening.
I peered through my side-window as the copter continued to circle in a steep bank. I could see that traffic was moving through the intersection below us. I watched as various cars whipped in a U-turn around to avoid the ominous chaos ahead. There were clusters of people milling around. They were throwing rocks and bottles at the passing cars. There were no police officers around, just an unruly mob venting hate on innocent motorists who happened to find themselves in the wrong place at the wrong time.
Other figures on the street were darting in and out of a liquor store at the corner, taking what they wanted. The looting, the beating and the hysteria was going on right below me. My mind went back 27 years to when I covered the Watts riots in 1965. I tried to draw up similarities that might help my reports on what was going on below. I remember telling myself that the big difference was that in Watts, they had fires.
