Some of the major features of the acquired immune deficiency syndrome may be understood in terms of the characteristics of the virus. Life-long infection is a consequence of the life cycle of retroviruses, the formation of stably integrated viral genetic information into host-cell DNA. The silent infection, controlled replication, and profile replication may be understood in terms of the interactions of the positive and negative regulatory genes that control virus growth. Selective infectivity and selective cytotoxicity of HIV-1 are primarily the consequences of the properties of the envelope glycoprotein and its interactions with the surface CD4 molecule. The ability of HIV-1 to enter a state of prolific replication in the presence of an antiviral immune response is largely attributed to the design of the outside of the virus. The functional domains of the envelope glycoprotein are not accessible to the immune system and other regions appear to be covered by a dense cloud of sugar molecules. Concealment of the virus by regulated growth, by budding to the interior surfaces of macrophages as well as concealment by a sugar coating, may help to explain the failure to protect chimpanzees from infection by candidate vaccines. Rapid medical prophylaxis is required in populations that currently experience high incidence of HIV-1 infection. Chemoprevention, the use of chemicals to prevent establishment of viral infection, in addition to vaccination should be investigated as means to control the AIDS epidemic.

LOS ANGELES, California (CNN) — At least three people were found dead after a man dressed as Santa Claus started shooting at a Christmas Eve party in suburban Los Angeles, police said Thursday.

Bruce Jeffery Pardo is a “person of interest” in the incident, authorities say.

An 8-year-old girl and a woman in her 20s were hospitalized with gunshot wounds that authorities do not consider life-threatening.

Crews took a third person to a hospital with an injury that wasn’t life-threatening and wasn’t caused by gunfire, said police in Covina, a city about 20 miles east of downtown Los Angeles.

The shooting started around 11:30 p.m. Wednesday.

When police arrived at the two-story house, they discovered a fire that caused “significant damage.” Authorities found three people dead inside but said they do not know how the three died. Their identities had not been released Thursday morning.

“There was some source of ignition that caused the fire,” Covina police Lt. Pat Buchanan said at a news conference Thursday morning. “We’ve not been able to identify it yet.”

Covina police identified “a person of interest” in the assault as Bruce Jeffery Pardo, 45. Pardo was described 6 feet 3 inches and 250 pounds with brown hair and blue eyes.

Authorities said Pardo’s name was given to them by people who were at the party.

Buchanan said Pardo was “going through some type of marital problems.”

Police believe the residence where the shootings occurred belongs to one of Pardo’s relatives, Buchanan said.

According to police, the gunman arrived at the party wearing a Santa Claus outfit but changed into regular street clothes before leaving. The gunman is considered armed and dangerous, Buchanan said.

Ted Bundy was finally executed in Florida after numerous murders of young women in Washington, Utah, Colorado and Florida. This suave soft spoken man seemed approachable to most women and easily lured them in with his charms. Escaping from his captors twice this man is an intelligent being. Soulless but intelligent. He also aided in the investigation into the “Green River Killer” case.

• November 8: Debra “Debi” Kent (17). Vanished from the parking lot of a school in Bountiful, Utah, hours after DaRonch escaped from Bundy. Shortly before his execution, Bundy confessed to investigators that he dumped Kent at a site near Fairview, Utah. An intense search of the site produced one human bone—a knee cap—which matched the profile for someone of Kent’s age and size. DNA testing has not been attempted.

Bundy is a suspect in the murder of Carol Valenzuela, who disappeared from Vancouver, Washington, on August 2, 1974. Her remains were discovered two months later south of Olympia, Washington, along with those of an unidentified female.

1975

Bundy is a suspect in the murder of Melanie Suzanne “Suzy” Cooley, who disappeared April 15, 1975, after leaving Nederland High School in Nederland, Colorado. Her bludgeoned and strangled corpse was discovered by road maintenance workers on May 2, 1975, in nearby Coal Creek Canyon. Gas receipts place Bundy in nearby Golden, Colorado, the day of the Cooley abduction.   The Jefferson County, Colorado, Sheriff’s Office has classified the Melanie Cooley murder as a cold case.

1978

Fugu (blow fish) is a fish which contains deadly poison in the organs. Despite the risk, fugu dishes remain as special feasts in Japan. Even the milt is considered as a great delicacy. Fugu is referred to as blow/globe/puffer fish since it blows its body up. The kanji (Chinese characters) used to write fugu indicates “river pig.” In western Japan, fugu is called “fuku,” which means “to blow” or “happiness.” It’s reported that about 40 kinds of blow fish are caught and cultured in Japan and that 10000 tons of blow fish are consumed each year. Shimonoseki-city in Yamaguchi, is known as fugu city and supplies a large amount of fugu.

The tube-frame design of the World Trade Center towers was a new approach which allowed open floor plans rather than columns distributed throughout the interior to support building loads as had traditionally been done. The World Trade Center towers utilized high-strength, load-bearing perimeter steel columns called Vierendeel trusses that were spaced closely together to form a strong, rigid wall structure, supporting virtually all lateral loads such as wind loads, and sharing the gravity load with the core columns. The perimeter structure containing 59 columns per side was constructed with extensive use of prefabricated modular pieces each consisting of three columns, three stories tall, connected by spandrel plates.   The spandrel plates were welded to the columns to create the modular pieces off-site at the fabrication shop.   Adjacent modules were bolted together with the splices occurring at mid-span of the columns and spandrels. The spandrel plates were located at each floor, transmitting shear stress between columns, allowing them to work together in resisting lateral loads. The joints between modules were staggered vertically so the column splices between adjacent modules were not at the same floor.

The core of the towers housed the elevator and utility shafts, restrooms, three stairwells, and other support spaces. The core of each tower was a rectangular area 87 by 135 feet (27 by 41 m) and contained 47 steel columns running from the bedrock to the top of the tower. The large, column-free space between the perimeter and core was bridged by prefabricated floor trusses. The floors supported their own weight as well as live loads, providing lateral stability to the exterior walls and distributing wind loads among the exterior walls. The floors consisted of 4 inch (10 cm) thick lightweight concrete slabs laid on a fluted steel deck. A grid of lightweight bridging trusses and main trusses supported the floors. The trusses connected to the perimeter at alternate columns and were on 6 foot 8 inch (2.03 m) centers. The top chords of the trusses were bolted to seats welded to the spandrels on the exterior side and a channel welded to the core columns on the interior side. The floors were connected to the perimeter spandrel plates with viscoelastic dampers which helped reduce the amount of sway felt by building occupants. The trusses supported a 4-inch (100 mm) thick lightweight concrete floor slab with shear connections for composite action.

                                    The first “window,” or opportunity, for the test opens at 3 p.m. ET Friday and runs through Tuesday.

So far, the U.S. military has successfully shot down a mock warhead in space with an interceptor missile in seven tests. The interceptor carries a “KILL VEHICLE,” which is designed to destroy the target missile by crashing into it.
